    Mage Info
    Mage stuff to know!

Hey guys. This is some stuff you should know for Mage.

The first are the Protocols. You’ve probably heard me talk about them. As your aware, almost every animal has a sort of rules of engagement, humans included. For Vampire, these are the Traditions. For Mage, they are called the Protocols. Even the Technocracy have their own version. They’re summarized below.
    • Respect those of Greater Knowledge
    • A Tutor’s debt must be repaid
    • A mage Word is his Honour; break not a sworn Vow
    • The Will of an Oracle must always be obeyed
    • Betray not your Cabal or Chantry
    • Conspire not the enemies of Ascension
    • Protect the Sleepers; they are ignorant of what they do
    • Be subtle in your Arts, lest Sleepers know you for what you are. (aka the Rule of Shade.)
If you have questions about these, just email me.

Second, Mages (like Vampires) have a problem when it comes to a unit of exchange. Money doesn’t mean much to one who can conger gold out of hand. So Magi trade in favours much in the same way as vampires. The trading is less vicious mind you (as a Mage will likely pay back a debt, see Protocols). The other form of currency for Magi is that of Quintessence. This can be either in pure Quintessence or Tass (Quintessence in a physical form). Quintessence/Tass is measured in units called a Dram. Quintessence is some times called Juice or Vis.

The Technocracy: The Modern Organization and conspiracy dedicated to furthering a scientific rational basis for the world. The Technocracy hopes to make reality “safe for humanity” by removing random elements and dangerous foibles. It believes that humanity does not have the ability to cope with such elements on its own. As a result, the Technocracy (or Technocratic Union) strives to eliminate magical phenomena and to stop mages, whose powers they do not understand.

Sleeper: A person who has not yet Awakened to the fullness of the supernatural world.

    Tellurian: The whole of Reality.

    Umbra: The spirit world(s).

Bani: An honorific indicating a mage’s Traditional affiliation: “Nightshade bani Verbena.”

Technomancer: A Mage of a mystic Tradition who uses the trappings of technology, but combines them with mystical understanding. Not to be confused with a Technocrat, a mage who relies wholly on the theories of science and technology.
Ascension: The mythical state of enlightenment beyond human comprehension.

Ascension War, The: The conflict to determine whether the world would embrace magic, science or faith.

Acolyte: A servitor of a mage who does not perform magic, but believes in its powers.

Marauder: A mage given over to dynamism, and tainted by insanity.

Oracle: A legendary mage who has moved beyond the understanding of other magicians, perhaps even to Ascension.

Pure Ones: Legendary primordial beings from the dawn of creation; some mages believe Avatars to be pieces of the Pure Ones.

Resonance: Mystical traces and attunements tied to magical actions, emotions, intent and desire. All magic carries Resonance, and Resonance reflects a mage’s will in creating an effect.

    Mage: Introduction
    Mage: Introduction

The small grey cat walked into the room, then jumped up to a chair and then onto the table. She walks along it unit she’s in front of you, and sits at attention.
After taking a good look at you, the grey cat announces “Right, let’s get to it.”

“Ok, my name is Nikita, or Nik for short… you can call me Nikita. I am a Familiar. I work with Steven. Note: I am not Steven’s Familiar. He does not own me. I perform certain services in return for Steven doing certain services for me. None of that D&D crap about summoning up a little demon or popping out of a pentagram. I am not from Hell. Now that that is clear, we can begin.”
Nikita continues in her authoritative tone, her tail curling round her.

“Who’s Steven? Well he’s a mage, but I will get to him in a latter.”

“What is a mage?” Nikita closed her eyes, sighed, and returns her gaze to you. “Wow, you are new around here. A ‘mage’ is a person who can, do to a combination of training and awakening to the conclusion that reality is subjective and thus bendable, can and do manipulate reality to their own ends.”

“If you where to give that type of ability to your average human, things probably wouldn’t go so well, read that little story about Plato’s Ring if you want an example. The whole power corrupting bit… That said, most of the ‘mages’ I’ve met actually want to do some good, and help their fellow man. That is how the Ascension war got started.”

“Your next line is ‘what is the Ascension War?’ Glad you asked. As a cat, I am not at all clear on this whole ‘war’ thing, but here is the gist of it. Way back when, one group of mages decided that they wanted reality to look like X, and other groups said reality should look like Y. Both group believed that their concept of reality was better for every one. Which one is correct, who knows. But they started fighting to reshape reality in there own image ever since.”

Nikita pauses a moment to clean her ear, then continues. “How does one fight for reality? They try to influence the ‘sleepers.’ ‘Sleepers’ are just normal people like you. But even thought they are asleep and can’t bend reality directly, they do affect reality subconsciously. Why do planes fly? The masses say they can. Does a car work? The masses say they can. Can you through a ball of fire down a street? The masses say you can not. Are there homeless people, sick, and hopeless? The masses say they are. That is correct, you, and every other ‘sleeper’ out there are directly responsible for the way things are. But do not take it personally, you do not know any better. One can not blame some one else for sleeping, can one.”

“And now you know why Mages are fighting. If they can convince the masses that the world is or can be a better place, it will be. Or better yet, wake every one up so it won’t matter any more. The problem is that mages differ on how to accomplish this. And none of them know how to wake up every sleeper.”
“That is why a mages life is…” Nikita pauses, smiles in an impish grin “interesting. You see, once a sleeper wakes up, that is it. There is no going back. Unlike some moves, he or she can not pick the blue pill and go back to sleep. I guess it is like looking into heaven or hell. You see it, but it also sees you. I have never, ever heard of any mage shirking their duties and live a normal life. The part of their being, called Avatars by some, will not let them. Oh, some try it for awhile, or retreat some where. But the same part of them that lets them bend reality also keeps them going toward their own personal Ascension.”

The little grey cat jumps off the table. “I have braked you brain a little. I will get some thing to eat, and we will continue this latter.” She walk into the hall and out of sight.
